Personal tax (T1) essentials
What it estimates
Federal and provincial income tax on your 2026 taxable income, using current brackets and basic personal amounts.
Average vs marginal rate
Your average rate is total tax divided by income. Your marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar, which matters for RRSP and raise decisions.
Built for every province
All 13 provinces and territories, including the Ontario surtax and the Quebec federal abatement.
Key deadlines
Returns and any balance owing are due April 30. Self employed individuals file by June 15, but payment is still due April 30.
Personal income tax estimate (T1)
Estimate of 2026 income tax only, based on basic personal amounts. It excludes CPP, EI, the Ontario Health Premium, low income reductions and other credits or deductions. Book a consultation for an exact figure.
Corporate tax (T2) essentials
Small business rate
A Canadian-controlled private corporation (CCPC) pays a reduced rate on its first $500,000 of active business income. In Ontario that is 9% federal plus 3.2%, dropping to 2.2% from July 1, 2026.
General rate
Income above the limit, and income of corporations that are not CCPCs, is taxed at 15% federal plus the provincial general rate: 26.5% combined in Ontario.
Deadlines
The T2 return is due six months after your fiscal year end. Any balance is due two months after year end, or three months for CCPCs that claimed the small business deduction and meet the CRA's other conditions.
Watch outs
Passive investment income over $50,000, or taxable capital over $10 million in an associated group, shrinks the $500,000 small business limit.
Corporate income tax estimate (T2)
Estimate for active business income only. Ontario's 2026 rate is blended for its July 1, 2026 cut on a calendar year; Quebec's cut applies to tax years beginning after April 29, 2026, and its small business rate also depends on hours paid to employees. It excludes passive income, the taxable capital and passive income grinds, and refundable taxes. Book a consultation for a full T2 review.
HST and GST essentials
Rates by province
13% HST in Ontario, 14% in Nova Scotia and 15% in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and PEI. Other provinces charge 5% GST, plus PST or QST where it applies.
When you must register
Once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters, you are no longer a small supplier and must register with the CRA. Self employed taxi and ride share drivers must register from their first sale, whatever their sales.
How often you file
Annual sales up to $1.5 million: file yearly. $1.5 to $6 million: quarterly. Over $6 million: monthly.
Input tax credits
Registrants can claim back the HST paid on business purchases, so you only remit the difference.
HST and GST calculator
Ontario charges a single 13% HST, made up of 5% federal and 8% provincial. Rates current as of 2026. Need help registering or filing?
